UNIONDALE, NY - In 1980 - I was 16 years old,
and at the time, was rooting for both hockey
teams.
Both?
Yes - I was a
weird teenager. I liked to watch both
teams play, but at that time, I tended to sway
the way of the City team.
However, I am
living proof that you can lose that genetic
trait.... (with no disrespect intended on
anyone).
However, I
digress...
But with the
other team out of the running, I was
concentrating of the Long Island team's
progress in the playoffs. Even though
the team struggled during the regular season,
a late season trade seemed to make the team
move in a different direction. The
dawning of the career of an Olympic hero, also
provided another great story. There
seemed to be a special story that was
unfolding; a special team, and organization
that was going to be setting a team record
that I know that no one would EVER break.
This was the start of a record 19 consecutive
playoff round victories.
And for every
great story to be told, there has to be a
starting point, and this is where Alan Hahn
talks about in his second book, "Birth of a
Dynasty - the 1980 New York Islanders".
This book, which should now be in book stores,
or on
www.amazon.com, is full of great stories
and little known facts about this team.
Alan talked
about a great deal about some of the stories
that are in the book (but I am going to leave
it to you to read it for yourself).
There was also a forward by Bobby Nystrom as
well.
As of the
writing of this piece, I have not yet been
able to read the book (which I should be doing
very soon), and I hope that you get your copy
soon.
Here are a
couple of pictures to see of the meeting (note
the first one with the Alan's darling little
son, Zach. Click on the picture for a
larger version.
