UNIONDALE, NY -
May 24, 1980. A day that will live in
the minds and hearts of Islander fans
worldwide. On this day, at 7:11 of
Overtime, Bobby Nystrom deflected a John
Tonelli pass to provide Long Island with its
first of four straight championships.
On March 4th,
2006, the current Islanders organization
honored these champions with a day to
celebrate their success. The Islanders
invited the Season ticket subscribers to watch
practice and then brought out the 1980 team.
An autograph session was set up where the
subscribers got the chance to get to talk to
these great players.
Later that
evening, the Islanders held a walk of fame,
where the team, from Bill Torrey, Al Arbour,
Jim Devellano and Ron Waske, to all the
players. Lastly, Denis Potvin brought
the Stanley Cup into the arena. Four
Booster Club members had the privilege of
being involved with the procession.
The team had a
pre-game celebration on the ice, where
everyone was introduced and give the chance to
be recognized for their incredible
achievements. Then, the team was given a
chance to take a spin around the ice to thank
the fans again.
The following
were some pictured that I took from the
afternoon and evening festivities. Some
pictures with the players were taken from a
cocktail party that the banner presenters were
able to attend before the ceremony began.
